There is absolutely no place for sexism–anywhere, and especially not in our government. Women and Gender Institure (WAGI) strongly condemns the misogynistic and degradinh remarks made by Quezon City 4th District Representative Bong Suntay about an actress. Statements that objectify, demean, or disrespect women are completely unacceptable and have no place in a society striving for equality.
Accountability is not optional. It is the minimum standard that every public servant must meet.
We therefore call on Rep. Bong Suntay to take full responsibility for his actions. This cannot be reduced to a cursory apology. It requires a sincere, public acknowledgment of the harm caused, and a clear commitment to undergo gender-sensitivity training. We further call on the leadership of the House of Representatives to formally address this conduct unbecoming of a public official and ensure that he upholds the dignity and decorum expected in the situation he serves.
As we celebrate Women’s Month–a time to honor the generations of women and girls who have fought for dignity, respect, and equality–this incident is a stark reminder that the struggle is far from over.
Freedom of speech is never a license for misogyny.
Sexism and the objectification of women must never be tolerated, least of all in the halls where our nation’s laws are crafted. We demand better. The women of the Philippines deserve better.
