“Focus on the Global South, with Save Agrarian Reform Alliance (SARA), aims to document land reform, land rights struggles, and post-land distribution accounts that have yet to find successful endings but can already show better beginnings for farmer-beneficiaries. The first of this series of accounts/stories was about the farmers at Hacienda Luisita, with links at http://youtu.be/mvwe019V0hc and http://bit.ly/1cufPda. The second stop, featured through a video documentation and article we now share with you, is at Hacienda Dolores, Porac, Pampanga, an agrarian hotspot and a scene of land grabbing and various human rights violations by real estate developers. In these interviews, farmer-beneficiaries at the Hacienda talk about their lives before the land grabbing and human rights violations, their current struggles, and aspirations and demands for reclaiming the lands.

The farmers, collectively organized under the Aniban ng Mamamayan ng Hacienda Dolores (Organization of Hacienda Dolores Citizens, or ANIBAN), are land rights claimants cultivating 761 hectares of productive agricultural lands. Their right to own the land is mandated and protected under the Philippine Government’s Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). Their ownership of the land should have been fulfilled as early as 1988, the year CARP was enacted.

CELEBRATING the International Youth Day (IYD) today, a few hundred youth members of the Alliance of Progressive Labor (APL-SENTRO) staged flashmobs and pickets in several key cities across the country to highlight the plight of the mostly youthful fast food workers and the need to reform the highly potential but anomaly-ridden Sangguniang Kabataan (SK).

In Quezon City, about 150 APL-Youth members held a lightning protest at noontime at the Activity Center in Trinoma Mall in North Edsa, site of numerous fast food chains, including a McDonald’s restaurant, in support of the global campaign for higher wages and rights of fast food workers.

[Video] Filipino Actress Kylie Padilla on #Gaza. By Jean Enriquez

Filipino Actress Kylie Padilla on #Gaza
Video by Jean Enriquez, posted in YouTube

[The video was taken during the August 6, Philippine Solidarity with Palestine candle lighting held in Thomas Morato/ Timog Circle in Quezon City.]

“I just want to say that…I am aware of what’s been happening. You know that I’m Muslim. I suffer. Everyday, I see pictures of children whose families, mothers are being killed. I feel guilty, because I have a good life here in the Philippines — having fun. But they are dying, starving.

There are some people who are afraid to talk, because others might hate them. But I’m not afraid! Because it’s not about religion. We are all human beings, we all have hearts. What’s been happening is not right. What if it happens to us? What if we are bombed and no one helps us? How will we feel? So let us speak up! What you are doing is right. I’m supposed to go somewhere but I saw what you were doing. It is time for the people to speak. You’re so great, you’re all my idols!

[Featured Video] Women’s Flashmob in Congress: Jail the Corrupt Lawmakers! by Clydie Pasia/CATWAP

PRESS RELEASE

September 10, 2013

Women’s Flashmob in Congress: Jail the Corrupt Lawmakers!

While welcoming the neophyte legislators’ manifesto on the 2014 Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), women’s groups belonging to the World March of Women-Pilipinas (WMW) and the Philippine Coalition for the International Criminal Court (PC-ICC) want lawmakers to ensure the complete abolition of the entire pork barrel system, and the punishment of guilty legislators and their conspirators.

Women dancers who appeared to be lobbyists in formal attire started to occupy the Congress lobby at 2PM (September 10), to make a clear statement that creative actions will be sustained until they see the people’s victory on this issue. The House Committee on Appropriations will be held today (September 10) and the plenary debate is yet to happen on September 21.

“The abolition of all forms of pork is not even assured yet, and they refuse to touch the President’s pork,” said Jean Enriquez, Coordinator of WMW-Pilipinas. Enriquez added that the legislators’ basis for keeping the President’s pork is untenable.

The neophyte legislators earlier said that it cannot be touched because it is meant for calamities and emergency situations.

“It has already been proposed that the calamity fund within the Special Purpose Fund (SPF) could be allocated to the unit on climate change or disaster management. The other items under the SPF should similarly be allocated under the regular budgets of the pertinent government agencies,” remarked Enriquez.

“We propose that a reallocation of pork be towards social services, such as preventive and integrative healthcare,” according to Pangging Santos of SARILAYA.

“Malacanang’s reasoning that the SPF does not come from people’s taxes but from contributions of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), among others, is non-sequitur. This is still public fund – the people’s money,” according Enriquez.

Becky Lozada, a member of the Philippine Coalition for the International Criminal Court, who joined the dance said “the PDAF scam is criminal considering the situation of poor people in the country. We are dancing today to show our protest but there is violence and armed conflict in the country because of massive poverty. Imagine what can be done if we abolish pork and put public funds to services for the people.”

Towards the end of the dance, the women took off their formal clothing to reveal shirts with the slogan “Scrap Pork!” They also held a banner with the message “Jail the Corrupt Lawmakers!”

The 30 flashmobbers of WMW include women from the Alliance of Progressive Labor-SENTRO, Bagong Kamalayan, CATW-AP, Center for Migrant Advocacy (CMA), KAISA-KA, SARILAYA, Pambansang Koalisyon ng mga Kababaihan sa Kanayunan (PKKK), WomanHealth Philippines, and the Youth and Students Advancing Gender Equality (YSAGE). They pledged to appear elsewhere “until pork in all its forms is removed, thieves jailed and the Freedom of Information Act passed.”

Feminist Flashmob for Women’s Rights [Philippines – Full Version]
PHTakeBacktheTech

Take back the techDuring the International Human Rights Day, December 10, 2012, a feminist flashmob dance to the tune of “I am Woman” led by World March of Women – Pilipinas was held at Plaza Miranda (in front on Quiapo Church, Manila, PH), at noon.

Women dancers-activists first blended with the vendors, with some holding balloons, as fortune-tellers, beggars, etc. Three dancers started clapping to the tune of the music, then seven dancers joined releasing purple balloons bearing the logo of the World March of Women. They were joined by another 20 coming from the crowd, until it grew to 70. The last batch of dancers, students from the University of the Philippines –Manila made it a throng. On the last minute of the song, as steps turned to hip-hop, dancers took off their costumes, revealing white shirts which defiantly bore words “RH Now” in the face of continued delay in its passage in Congress. Some shirts shout “Climate Justice!”, in the face of ongoing negotiations in Doha, Qatar and the devastation of typhoon Pablo in Mindanao. Other shirts carried slogans such as “Women Need FOI!”, “Secure Jobs for All!” and “Scrap VFA!”

Around 100 participated in the flashmob from Alliance of Progressive Labor (APL), Bagong Kamalayan, Batis Center for Women, Buklod, Center for Migrant Advocacy (CMA), Coalition Against Trafficking in Women – Asia Pacific (CATW-AP), Focus on the Global South, Foundation for Media Alternatives, KAISA – Nagkakaisang Iskolar para sa Pamantasan at Sambayanan – UP Diliman, KAISA-KA, Pambansang Koalisyon ng Kababaihan sa Kanayunan (PKKK), Partido ng Manggagawa, Sarilaya, TIGRA Philippines, UP Manila students, WomanHealth Philippines, Women’s Crisis Center (WCC), and Youth and Students Advancing Gender Equality (YSAGE)

[Featured Video] Liwanag Sa Dilim (by Rivermaya) feat the Bilibid Dancing Inmates by Baliklaya

Liwanag Sa Dilim (by Rivermaya) feat the Bilibid Dancing Inmates

“Two men look out the same prison bars; one sees mud and the other stars.” (Frederick Langbridge)

The human spirit never loses its brilliance no matter what challenges it encounters. In the face of darkness, it shines even brighter with its light igniting the light of others.

“Liwanag sa Dilim” (roughly translated in English as “Light in Darkness”) is a creative representation of the daily life of inmates in the New Bilibid Prison.

We see how one prisoner’s optimistic outlook in life can spark change in all areas of Bilibid.

We witness the talents and skills that have been developed behind bars through rehabilitative endeavors in education, sports, small enterprises, arts and crafts.

The production of this video is in line with the 10th year celebration in prison service of Baliklaya, the only student-run prison service organization in the Philippines.

About BALIKLAYA

Baliklaya, a non-profit, non-political, student-run group, is an applying organization of the Ateneo de Manila University. Before it became a full-pledged organization last 2009, it was the flagship program of Ateneo Lex, a separate accredited organization.

Vision

Baliklaya envisions the formation of a community composed of legally, economically, and socially-aware youth, engaged in alleviating the challenges of communities deprived of justice and fundamental human rights.

Mission

To steer its membership towards the task of nation building and to inculcate in them a strong desire for social commitment, the organization shall undertake projects which uplift the dignity, worth, and welfare of one of the most misconceived, marginalized, and impoverished sectors of Philippine society – the prisoners.

Advocacy

Baliklaya’s advocacy is prisoner rights, particularly that of the inmates inherent right to human dignity, realized through the organization’s various Bilibid-based prison service endeavors and intense advocacy campaign. While, in truth, any human being’s dignity can never be taken away (not by any court of justice or societal condemnation), inmates can’t help but feel a loss of dignity, because of their circumstances (the errors they have committed and the guilt that stems from such, as worsened by poor living conditions). Thus, by providing them venues for wellness development and opportunities for productivity, the organization empowers said inmates, with the hopes of restoring this lost sense of dignity.

Balik means to go back, laya is freedom. While the organization does not aim to literally free prisoners, it pursues a different sort of freedom, one that frees the prisoners from societal stereotypes and the feeling of lack of dignity.

Philippines: Abuses Go Unpunished

Published on Jun 27, 2012 by Human Rights Watch

Philippines: 2 Years under Aquino, Abuses Go Unpunished
No Successful Prosecutions of Security Forces for Killings, ‘Disappearances’

(New York, June 28, 2012) –President Benigno Aquino III of the Philippines has not fulfilled his promises to hold accountable security forces responsible for serious abuses since taking office two years ago, Human Rights Watch said today. The Aquino government has not successfully prosecuted a single case of extrajudicial killing or enforced disappearance, including those committed during his presidency, Human Rights Watch said.

In his inaugural speech on June 30, 2010, Aquino gave “marching orders” to the Justice Department to “begin the process of providing true and complete justice for all.” Five months later, at an event to commemorate human rights, he said that, “The culture of silence, injustice and impunity that once reigned is now a thing of the past.” And during his 2011 State of the Nation Address, Aquino reiterated this commitment, saying, “We are aware that the attainment of true justice does not end in the filing of cases, but in the conviction of criminals.”

“President Aquino has not lived up to his promises to bring those responsible for serious abuses to justice,” said Elaine Pearson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “Concrete measures — rather than more promises — are needed now.”

Human Rights Watch today released a video, “Philippines: No Justice for Victims of Enforced Disappearances,” in which family members of the “disappeared” call on the president to live up to his promises of justice.
