The detrimental impact of the recent typhoons and floods on Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and other affected areas is undeniable. Many schools, if not submerged, are presently serving as evacuation centers. Our communities, families, parents, children, and even individual teachers are grappling with their respective concerns in light of this calamity. From cleaning homes to addressing family needs and ensuring adequate school supplies, more time for preparation is essential.
While Brigada Eskwela was initiated last Monday, it has yet to be carried out in most affected areas. Training for the new MATATAG Curriculum has also been delayed due to the suspension of classes and government work. With government offices resuming only tomorrow, Friday, there is insufficient time for our schools to adequately prepare for the opening of classes on Monday. Furthermore, the lack of materials necessary for implementing the MATATAG Curriculum is a concern not only in the Big 3 regions but across the entire DepEd system.
Therefore, the Teachers Dignity Coalition (TDC) strongly recommends postponing the opening of classes by at least one week in affected areas, and ideally, nationwide. We believe that Sec. Sonny Angara and President Marcos will understand this recommendation, particularly since many LGUs have already declared a state of calamity.
Let us prioritize allowing our kababayans, teachers, parents, and students to address their
domestic challenges stemming from the impact of typhoons and floods. This delay will also provide the Department of Education (DepEd) with the opportunity to thoroughly prepare. #
