In a world where technology dominates daily life, a group of young environmental advocates is taking a step back to reconnect with nature. The 2024 Summer Environmental Youth (SEY) Camp, themed “Back to the Basics: RE-connect, RE-discover, RE-vitalize for Environmental Action,” concluded this weekend with 50 participants and a renewed sense of environmental stewardship.

Held from May 10-12 in the lush landscapes of Bataan, the camp aimed to bridge the gap between technological advancement and environmental preservation. It provided a platform for young people to immerse themselves in nature, away from digital distractions, and to rediscover the importance of environmental care.

The camp kicked off with an introduction session where participants shared their expectations and set collective goals. Activities like the “Web of Life” highlighted the interconnectedness of all living things, while storytelling sessions allowed participants to share personal experiences related to nature.

On the second day, morning exercises and discussions on renewable energy underscored the potential of technology to benefit the environment. Traditional Filipino games in the afternoon fostered teamwork and unity, emphasizing the camp’s theme of reconnecting with cultural roots.

The final day focused on youth leadership and action planning. Workshops encouraged participants to brainstorm innovative solutions to local environmental challenges. Jochelle Magracia, Chairperson of YoungBEAN, emphasized the role of young leaders in driving the climate justice movement forward.

Funding for the camp came from donations and pledges, ensuring that all participants could focus on learning and collaboration without financial burden. The event ended with a pledge of commitment, as participants vowed to apply their newfound knowledge and passion for the environment in their communities.

As the camp concluded, participants left with a revitalized spirit and a deeper connection to both nature and their cultural heritage. The 2024 SEY Camp successfully demonstrated that by going back to basics, today’s youth can lead the way toward a more sustainable and harmonious future.
