Orion, Bataan— In commemorating the World Environment Day, “We, young Bataeṅos, are thus compelled to take it as our role and responsibility to protect Mother Nature and, consequently, to contribute to the common good for the protection of our future” this was a statement made by Eric Beren, Secretary General of the Young Bataeῆos for Environmental Advocacy Network (YoungBEAN) during their World Environment Day awareness and coastal clean-up activity held in a mangroves sanctuary in Brgy. Camachile, Orion, Bataan.

The YoungBEAN in partnership with Nuclear/Coal-Free Bataan Movement, PANGISDA Bataan and the Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Camachile have launched the environmental awareness activity thru the coastal-clean drive to raise public awareness on the many challenges that confront the environment today and urging the public to take a stand to preserve the environment.

Likewise, the group have called on the government to take into primary consideration the welfare and rights of the environment and the communities over the demands of the destructive and polluting businesses which cause environmental and human rights harms due to their contributions to the worsening environmental damage and climate crisis.

They are calling on the government to act with urgency, without any further delay, in protecting the lives, livelihood, and future of their families.

To mark this year’s World Environment Day, YoungBEAN along with the group held a coastal clean-up activity and a discussion on the urgency of climate /environmental action to preserve and defend the environment.

Eric Beren, urged the government to heed the calls of marginalized communities, including the youth, who are bearing the brunt of environmental destruction and climate crisis.

“Kaming mga kabataan ay apektado ng pagkasira ng kalikasan. Marami sa aming pamilya ay umaasa sa biyaya ng kalikasan, tulad ng karagatan, kung nalalason na ang karagatan dahil sa polusyon at direktang pagwasak. Saan pa kukuha ng kabuhayan ang aming mga magulang, paano na ang aming pagkain, pag-aaral at ang aming kinabukasan? ” Eric Beren said.

“We need to stand up for environmental justice not just for Bataenos, but also for the Filipino youth because we refuse to leave an uncertain future for our youth. We believe that the environmental and climate crisis can be addressed, but only if we start doing what is good for the environment-that is to stop the destructive activities and to hold the polluters responsible and liable for the damage they’re causing,” added by Derek Cabe, Coordinator of Nuclear/Coal-Free Bataan Movement said.
