Saying that they will not dance to the twisted tune of cha-cha (charter change), women members of Akbayan Party and Akbayan Youth today showcased their resistance through a creative “bongga ka day” flash dance action in Quezon City. Their creative protest, held just a day before International Women’s Day, emphasized their refusal to support any moves to revise the country’s constitution for narrow political and economic interests.

Akbayan President Rafaela David stated, “Charter change is not the dance of Filipino women. We refuse to be swayed to a distorted tune crafted to keep a few self-serving leaders on their thrones. While our constitution is not flawless and must evolve with the changing times, we oppose any revision for vested political and economic gains.”

“We reject the dominance of traditional politicians and political dynasties in shaping our nation’s future. Enough is enough! Filipino women will defeat cha-cha and dance to our own symphony of sisterhood, solidarity, and empowerment.” David asserted.

The spirited protest, involving 50 young women and mothers, energized the streets of Cubao, Quezon City, drawing attention from passersby. Their message to the government was clear: any attempts to undermine the constitution will face staunch opposition from the women’s sector.

“We call on the government to abandon all its cha-cha schemes and focus its attention in addressing the pressing issues and concerns of Filipino women such as the gender wage gap suffered by women workers, gender-based violence both in workplaces and homes, and underrepresentation of women in various levels of governance,” David said.
