Freedom of Expression Conference VII Spotlights Youth Action and Information Integrity

In its seventh edition, the Freedom of Expression Conference (FreeXP.con) continues to serve as a cornerstone for human rights defenders, journalists, tech experts, academics, and advocates in the Philippines. Since its inception in 2017, the conference has been pivotal in empowering advocates, providing them with vital tools and knowledge to champion human rights, especially in the digital realm.

Partnering with key entities like the British Embassy, the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development, and DKA Austria, Human Rights Online Philippines has paved the way for this year’s FreeXP.con VII. Collaborating with the Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA), this conference marks an integral part of the International Human Rights Week 2023 and the 75th anniversary celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR@75).

The theme for this year’s conference, “Youth Action for Promoting Freedom of Expression in Southeast Asia,” accentuates the crucial role young individuals play in advocating for freedom of expression and combating disinformation. FreeXP.con VII aims to delve into challenges surrounding freedom of expression in the region, emphasizing the contributions of youth in countering misinformation.

The conference addresses critical issues like distinguishing fake news from factual information and provides a platform for youth voices to engage in discussions and initiatives tackling these challenges. The focus on empowering the youth with knowledge and skills to navigate the digital information landscape is key to fostering critical thinking and responsible communication.

Social Media’s Impact on Southeast Asian Youth

The pervasive influence of social media in Southeast Asia has transformed communication patterns and societal perspectives for young people. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok offer unparalleled access to information, entertainment, and social connections. While these platforms facilitate self-expression and activism, they also pose challenges such as cyberbullying, mental health concerns, and the spread of misinformation.

Recognizing the dual nature of social media, efforts are aimed at educating youth on digital literacy and fostering healthy online behaviors. Empowering them to discern credible information, fact-check sources, and promote respectful communication is crucial for positive digital experiences.

Empowering Youth as Advocates for Freedom and Truth

The intersection of youth, social media, and human rights activism underscores the need for strategic approaches. While social media amplifies their influence, it’s vital to sustain their engagement beyond online activism. Empowering them with critical thinking skills and avenues for real-world actions is essential for meaningful involvement in advocating for freedom of expression and truth.
