Rights groups in Cebu City led by the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), in partnership with Kilusan para sa Pambansang Demokrasya (KILUSAN-CEBU) and the People’s Campaign Against Tyranny (PCAT), and together with the Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearance (FIND) and the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA), gather on Labor Day in a People’s Caravan to push candidates to incorporate a human rights electoral agenda in their platforms.
“The human rights situation in the country has been deteriorating. Civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the people, including the women, children, workers, among others, have been seriously affected,” said Ramiel Aballe, TFDP staff in the Visayas. He further explained that through the policies, programs, and projects implemented by the government, as well as the President’s pronouncements, media statements and actions, human rights and human rights defenders have been attacked and demonized. “This has resulted in entrenched impunity and erosion of rule of law; climate of fear and silence; worsening incidence of poverty, hunger, joblessness, and derogation of economic, social, cultural rights,” he continued.
The People’s Caravan, which will go around the downtown streets of Cebu City, focuses on the call: ITAGUYOD ANG KAPAKANAN NG MANGGAGAWA, IPAGLABAN ANG KARAPATAN NG MAMAMAYAN, PAIRALIN ANG KARAPATANG-PANTAO AT DEMOKRASYA BILANG AGENDA SA ELEKSYONG 2019.
The People’s Caravan aims to set the framework and guidelines for the upcoming mid-term elections. This is an integral part of the People’s Campaign Against Tyranny through the #SampuSigurado: KarapatDapat Karapatan Dapat, a PAHRA-iDEFEND campaign. The groups also push for the enactment of a human rights defenders protection law.
By coming together on Labor Day, the groups reiterate their demand for the government to respect human rights. It is also an appeal for the people to use their power to vote for candidates who will prioritize the people’s human rights.###
