The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) today said that aside from the promotion of sports in public schools, the DepEd should also provide a space to inculcate patriotism among the public school children by strengthening the teaching of Philippine History, especially in high school.
Benjo Basas, the group’s chairperson said that while they appreciate the sports program of the Department, they also want to feel that the government is giving equal importance to patriotism and it would be manifested thru “reinforced teaching of Philippine History, languages, and literature and further exposure of children to the rich cultural heritage of our nation which serves as our national identity.”
Basas said that while sports are taught in Physical Education subject and the DepEd holds Palarong Pambansa yearly as its biggest event, Philippine History was left to elementary school since 2012 when the Department adopted the new curriculum under the K-12 program.
“To inculcate patriotism as mandated by our Constitution, the teaching of Philippine History should be offered in all levels, from elementary to tertiary to ensure that all our children will be responsible citizens of the future, will recognize and be proud of their heritage and will love their country,” Basas added.
Benjo Basas is also the first nominee of Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM) Partylist and vowed to bring the fight for stronger civic and cultural education if given a chance to sit in Congress. He teaches Araling Panlipunan in Baesa High School, Caloocan City since 2002 up to October 2018 when he filed the CONA for party-list representation in COMELEC.
“I hope the DepEd leadership may have time to tackle this issue, after all, we have personally discussed this to the Secretary more than a year ago and she agreed that the content curriculum should be revisited. With the current social atmosphere the nation is facing, our schools should be the bastion of patriotism.” Basas ended.
Basas is currently in Davao City for a series of meetings that coincide with the Palarong Pambansa 2019.
