[Statement] Stop using migrant workers for power plays -SENTRO

SENTRO Statement on Chinese Migrant Workers:
Stop using migrant workers for power plays

Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua is acting like a bully in issuing threats to harm Filipinos working in China. His arrogance manifests the attitude of the Chinese government towards our country.

We differentiate the Chinese workers from their government. Like millions of Filipino migrant workers abroad, all they want is to earn a living.

It is for this reason that we in SENTRO shares Nagkaisa’s demand that deportation should NOT be the primary response to the influx of the undocumented.

NAGKAISA recommends that those found to be doing jobs that Filipino workers are not capable of doing or are not able to fill up should be immediately provided the proper working documents.

Meanwhile, those found to be doing jobs that Filipino workers are able to do and are willing to fill up should be repatriated back to their home country at the expense of their employers, recruiters or of their government, with full wages for the entire duration of their contract. On top of that, employers or recruiters should be penalized for violating the law.

SENTRO believes that this latest example of bullying by the Chinese Ambassador is the result of Mr. Duterte’s mendicancy towards China!

This should certainly warn voters what our future would be should we make the mistake of electing people who are at his beck and call.
