CHILD PROTECTION ADVOCACY, AN EYE-OPENER FOR TEACHERS.

Children’s Legal Rights and Development Center, Inc. (CLRDC) organized a whole day seminar that aims to broaden the knowledge of the teachers from Barangay 176 Bagong Silang, Caloocan City on Child Protection Laws and Policies. The seminar entitled: “Basic Paralegal Orientation on Child Protection Policies for Teachers of Barangay 176, Bagong Silang, Caloocan City” was held last May 20, 2015 at KnK House for Youth, Guadanoville.
Teachers from five (5) schools were invited to join the said seminar including Kalayaan National High School, Silanganan Elementary School, Bagong Silang High School, Sto. Niño Elementary School and St. John Academy.
Fifteen (15) teachers representing the said schools who actively participated in the discussion regarding the Rights that children must exercise as well as the corresponding Laws that protect them from being abused, are also members of the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children at Barangay 176, Bagong Silang.
The participants thought of this seminar as an eye-opener that opened doors to understanding the situation of the children especially those inside the holding centers, the cases of unreported abuse in the barangay where they live, and what they can do about these issues as teachers. “Kalampagin ang Barangay,” said one participant. “What is the use of the law if the law cannot protect the children?” remarked another teacher participant, claiming that despite having many laws that protect children, still it doesn’t seem to work. The concluding program gave the participants the opportunity to present their action plans to promote child protection in their respective schools and propose to incorporate them in the barangay programs.
