DEPED-LGU-CSOs gather for women literacy

Women literacy ensures women recognition, economic power, health, and empowerment! This is the theme of the gathering of the Department of Education, Local Government Unit, and Civil Society Organizations on March 1-2 that will look at girls and women’s access to quality education.

Despite girls’ high performance in education, indigenous, Moro and even urban poor youth and women are still denied access to literacy and education. It shows that factors related to school, family, community, and girl itself are barriers to girl/female education. Early marriage or unplanned pregnancies are often cited as reasons for dropping out of school. Oftentimes, these are girls that are absolutely unaware of their adolescent sexuality and reproductive health.

Improving literacy rates by 50% is one of the neglected EFA goals in the country. “The target of Education for All by 2015 will not be achieved without empowering women through literacy as well as improving literacy rates for boys and men” said Prof. Flora Arellano, Vice President of E-Net Philippines.

The DepEd-LGU-CSOs forum will be participated in by selected Civil Society Organizations from Central Mindanao Region, SOCSARGEN, Iligan, Cagayan, and Davao City, the Department of Education, and Local Government Units.

“As 2015 draws near, we have to strengthen our collective commitment to ensure the right to education of all Filipinos,” remarked Cecilia Soriano, National Coordinator of E-Net Philippines

This activity is in line with the celebration of Magna Carta of Women, Philippine Convention of Eliminating Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) 2012 slated every march as joint effort of E-Net Philippines, Department of Education and regional government of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
