The College of Social Work and Community Development Announces the Selection of Salvacion Basiano as Recipient of the 2012 University of the Philippines Gawad Tandang Sora.

The College of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD) of the University of the Philippines Diliman announces the selection of SALVACION “NANAY SALVE” BASIANO , Founding President of the Confederation of Older Peoples’ Associations of the Philippines (COPAP) as the recipient of the 2012 GAWAD TANDANG SORA. Nanay Salve embodies the spirit of social involvement and volunteerism for the good of the community that Tandang Sora represented. She is the second recipient of the Gawad which started in 2010 with retired UP Professor Flora Celi Lansang as the first awardee. .

The awarding will be on February 21, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. during the CSWCD’s College Week celebration and UP Diliman’s commemoration of the 200th birth anniversary of Tandang Sora. The awardee will receive a trophy made by UP Artist and College of Fine Arts professor Leonilo Doloricon and a cash award from the Office of the Chancellor of UP Diliman.

Nanay Salve is recognized for her long history of involvement in social development particularly working among the poor and disadvantaged. She has actively organized to build cohesion among beneficiaries of low-cost housing in Quezon City by stressing the importance of community building and establishing a pre-school for children in the community. Married to a husband with disability, Nanay Salve also became active with the Ephpheta Foundation for the Blind.

In recent years, Nanay Salve focused her energy on advocacy for the elderly. She is the Founding President of the Confederation of Older Peoples’ Associations of the Philippines (COPAP), an umbrella organization of 109 older people’s organizations in the country. She was the spokesperson of the elderly in the lobbying efforts to pass the bill which is now Republic Act 9994 or the “Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010”. Such lobbying involved both presentations in committee meetings of the House and the Senate but also mobilizations in Mendiola to highlight the urgency and necessity of the passage of the bill. She twice represented Philippine non-government organizations of the elderly in the United Nations conferences in New York where her presentation on the need for speedy actions for the elderly and the importance of the participation of older people in asserting their rights and welfare.

The U.P. Gawad Tandang Sora is the award bestowed to outstanding social development academics and/or practitioners or social development organizations. It honors individuals/organizations who/which have excelled in social work, community development, women and development and social development. The recognition, which comes with a trophy, is given to an individual or organization every two years. It is administered by the College of Social Work and Community Development of the University of the Philippines Diliman.

The award is named after Melchora “Tandang Sora” Aquino, the “Mother of the Philippine Revolution” whose life and deeds represent love of country and service to her fellow Filipinos.
