MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 2:56 PM) Four people were hurt, including two policemen, at the height of the demolition of a row of shanties in San Juan City Wednesday, police said.
Over 180 police clashed with residents of Bgy. Corazon de Jesus. The injured were brought to San Juan Medical Center for treatment.
Militant group Bayan, meanwhile, condemned the violent dispersal of homes and the arrest of protesters and said this could have been avoided had City Hall listened to residents’ suggestions of various modes of in-city relocation.
In their proposal, residents would either transfer to a different lot within the city or move inwards of their existing community to give way to the city projects. “The city government did not heed these proposals and instead pushed for the violent demolition of houses knowing fully well that the residents would resist,” Bayan rued in a statement.
