One-third of P1.8T budget allocated for poverty reduction, social services

MANILA, Philippines — The Aquino administration has allocated almost a third of this year’s P1.816 trillion budget for poverty reduction and social services.
Budget chief Florencio Abad said P568.6 billion or about 32 percent of thr budget has been allocated to the social services sector.
Abad said this aims to reduce poverty incidence to 16.6 percent and to help the country meet key United Nations Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
“This Administration is investing in programs, activities and projects that have direct, immediate and substantial impact in empowering the poor,” he said.
“Our focus is to provide life vests to those drowning in poverty through targeted social protection packages, and to significantly invest in their education and healthcare,” Abad added.
