Amid renewed clashes between the military and terrorist groups in Mindanao, the Filipino-Chinese community has stepped up its support for the cause of educating poor kids who swim their way to school in Western Mindanao as a long-lasting solution to the peace and order problem there.

The  Kaisa Para sa Kaunlaran Inc (Kaisa), one of the country’s biggest Filipino-Chinese organizations, has donated 25 boxes of books and school supplies to two isolated Christian and Muslim communities where kids either swim in sea water or rampaging mountain rivers to reach schools in Zamboanga City and Zamboanga del Sur.

“Education is a good ingredient for lasting peace. Peace is not just the absence of war but a situation where everyone regardless of race, religion, ethnicity and class can live their lives fully,” said Kaisa Founding President Teresita Ang See of their decision to help some 500 poor Mindanao children with their schooling.

Kaisa is responding to the request of the Kristiyano-Islam Peace Library (Kris) for help to Muslim children in a mangrove community in Layag Layag, Zamboanga City who swim or wade their way to school for two hours daily.

“We thank Kaisa for reaching out to these hapless kids who show true grid and determination by swimming their way to learning come hell or high water. There will be less violence in Mindanao if people there are less hungry, less angry and better educated,” said Kris Founding President Armand Dean Nocum.

Nocum also thanked Asia Brewery Inc. Chief Operating Officer Michael G. Tan for agreeing to undertake the transport of 25 boxes of books and schools supplies from Manila to Zamboanga City.

In Zamboanga, Nocum will be working with Dr. Anton Lim of the Tzu Chi Foundation, blogger Jay Jaboneta and marketing guru Josiah Go who raised funds to build boats and provide other help to the Layag Layag community.

In Tungawan, Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, Kris will distribute the Kaisa books and schools supplies and help fill up the library of the Claret Mission Center of Claretian priest Fr. Larry Lorenzo so kids there will no longer have to walk hours over a combination of muddy, stony mountain terrain; and swim through flood-prone rivers to reach the town’s public library.

The Tungawan library is the 4th Kris Peace Library put up in partnership with the Claretian Missionary Order and the Kapatirang Claretian Inc (KCI), an organization of ex-Claretian priests and seminarians. There are Kris Peace Libraries in Manicahan, Zamboanga City; Don Antonio Heights, Quezon City; and in Rodriguez, Rizal.

Donors may bring books, school supplies and old computers to the Kris Library in No. 9, Dona Isidora Street, Don Antonio Heights, Diliman, Quezon City or at Dean & Kings Legal PR and Communications Marketing at Suite 300, Kimvi Realty & Dev’t Bldg, 1191 Maria Orosa St., Ermita, Manila. Donors may call 3393732/09228169510 or check http://www.krislibrary.com for direction.

  7. BE SAFE! DONT GET VICTIMIZED! READ THIS!
    THE WORST MEDICAL CENTER!
This is a friendly advice to all OFWs, private and public employees out there especially to all Albayanos like my husband. Dont get fooled by the unlimited card offer of the EMBARCADERO MEDICAL CENTER! IT’S A SCAM!
Not only is the product full of craps and lies but if you bought it because you wanna save, then save your hard earned money for something that is more valuable and worth your effort beacause I tell you that the EMC unli card is not worth every centavo at all!
To make a long story short, here is the nightmare I got from this scam:
My nanay had 3 days of loose bowel movement last November 2011. Becuase a certain Maan Dalit convinced my nanay to avail of the EMC unli card which was supposed to save her money aside from the unlimited medical checkup offer because of the 15% laboratory, 10% ultrasound, 5% other medical services discounts on it, I went with her when she availed of it. What happened was the least of our ideas.
It was early at 8 am when we went there on a Friday. There was no doctor on duty so we waited. At 10 am there was still no doctor which the receptionist told us there was someone coming in and my nanay has alredy went to the comfort room 3x. So I asked again if there was really a doctor that was coming over. This time, I was meet with the manager named Melanie Montas. She made taray and said if our case was emergency then we should just go to the nearest hospital. This was after waiting for almost 2 and counting hours!
She was ordered to have CBC, x-ray, pap smear, and all other labs. Nalilito ako tuloy. Kelangan pa ba talaga ng mga nun? Di ba LBM lang naman problema dapat?! Bakit andami ng procedures?
When my nanay was finished with all her labs, we then went to the cashier. We really get angry because when we saw our bill wala naman ni isang discount as said in their unli card offering! Ang sabi pa ng cashier eh nasa right daw yon ng medical center na i-change ang terms and conditions anytime. So ganon na lang? Eh obvious bang pangloloko na ang nangyayari niyan!
Your going to buy the unli card with all its said benefits only to find out upon using it that the benefits that you bought it for has already been changed! Then this is a scam!
Because I was going to come back here in Taiwan the following week, my nanay and me decided to complain to the DTI Albay. We then found out that this was not the first time that Embarcadero medical center was being complained of but we were disappointed to know that they are not in charge of this as we have to say the matter to the Department of Health.
We went to DOH and they were not surprised to hear another complaint against the edstablishment. So we give them the contact number and they again said that as usual, no ones answering the 480-0087 landline number. I asked what can we do instead but time is running short. It was already pass 5 pm.
I said I’ll go back there again and complain personally to their highest ranking officer but decided that it will be useless as there was no one going on Saturdays. And I have to pack my bags again and go back to work.
So I just decided to send this message to all those people who can be affected by their pangloloko. To make matters worse, here are the other things I found out at DOH:
    1. The Embarcadero Medical Center is licensed by the Department of Health but not accredited as their management does not have medical backgrounds.
    2. No specialist doctor is employed or affiliated with Embarcadero Medical Center only general physicians of questionable backgrounds. They have even employed fake doctors, those without PRC licenses.
    3. A favorite diagnosis is allergic rhinitis even if you have a stomach ache, diarrhea or simple cold only. Nasayang lang ang unli card mo free consultation nga naman, kelangan mo pa pala ng second opinion!
    4. X-ray readings take 1 week to get because they still have to find a doctor who will read it for them for low cost.
    5. Managers make fun of and discuss all the patients records during their break time and even make chismis of their corporate accounts with the most number of TBs, STDs, etc.
    6. Embarcadero Medical Center accepts AIDS patients and recycles ther used needles.
    7. The unli card price was said to differ from all the account executives selling it. From 250 pesos to 500 pesos, san ka pa?
    8. San Antonio Laboratory has access to the Embarcadero Medical Centers confidential records as they have a spy inside as employee. Pati ba used needles, nirerecyle rin!
    And more other countless incidents.
The important thing is I make everyone aware of this scammer establishment.
Do not let this end here. Do your part.
PASS THIS WARNING TO ALL YOUR EMAIL LISTINGS, FAMILY, RELATIVES, FRIENDS, COWORKERS, WHOEVER THEY ARE. THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT NO ONE WILL EVER BE VICTIMIZED B Y EMBARCADERO MEDICAL CENTER AGAIN!
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. BE RESPONSIBLE. YOU’LL NEVER KNOW IF YOUR LOVED ONES WILL BE NEXT! ACT NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!
