Unwetter / Thunderstorm
An Audio-Visual Exhibit on Climate Change
10 – 29 May 2011

Cyclones, landslides and drought are the new climate changes with whom the humanity has to handle. The project “Thunderstorm” discusses these environmental problems and gives the opportunity for open forum and reflections.

All we need to know about climate change, in terms of science, has been said. However, the issue raises not only political, economic and social questions, but also cultural ones. The exhibition questions the human behaviour towards the environment. It raises the question of how human beings are dealing with the imponderables of the climate and the environment, how they have adapted, and which survival strategies they have developed.

12 international artists prepared video and sound recordings, which show, how strong culture and climate are fused together. The guests will get an impression how impulsive and unpredictable nature is. The videos will be screened in a black box at the same time. You see different pictures and hear different sound simultaneously – a completely mess without a strict line, exactly how our nature is.

South America was the first place where the project “Thunderstorm” was exposed. Starting in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Chile the project has moved to Kiel, Munich and Berlin now the films are shown in Asia. Goethe-Institut Hong Kong opened the exhibit in Asia and now the videos will be screened in Manila. The Goethe-InstitutPhilippinen together with the Ayala Museum will take the exhibit it will be shown from the 10 to 29 May 2011.

Curator:
Alfons Hug, born in 1950 in Hochdorf, Southern Germany is a curator, critic and exhibition
organizer.He curated the XXV and XXVI São Paulo Art Biennial. Hug was the first non-Brazilian to curate this art event.
Since the mid-’80s Hug has worked as Director of Goethe-Institutes (German Cultural Centres) in Lagos, Medellín, Brasilia, Caracas and Moscow.
In the ’90s Hug was head of the Visual Arts Department at “Haus der Kulturen der Welt” (House of World Cultures), Berlin.
