“Many times a day I realize how much my own life is built upon the labors of my fellowmen, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.”

Thus said Albert Einstein, a German-born American physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity, many years ago. He couldn’t have been more right.

The same thought captures the sentiment of every Filipino as workers all throughout the country once again take the limelight in the celebration of Labor Day today.

The first day of May has been declared as Labor Day, a regular holiday, to enable the whole nation to mark and to honor with fitting celebration contribution of workers to national development.

This year’s Labor Day celebration revolves around the theme “Matuwid na Daan Tungo sa Kaunlaran Para sa Lahat,” echoes the Aquino administration’s thrust for all the stakeholders to work together in achieving change that will pave the way towards progress and development for the whole country and its people.

In Eastern Visayas, the labor sector will once again take the limelight in the Regional Commemorative Program at the Tacloban City Convention Center.

Jobs and Livelihood and Service Fair will be conducted, all to pay tribute and to provide opportunities for the workers and their families to look for alternative livelihood opportunities especially in these trying times.

Although no wage hike increase for the private workers will be announced on Labor Day, the private labor sector in Eastern Visayas is aware that the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board, is doing something to look into the possibility of another wage hike.

Perhaps the best way to pay tribute to the Filipino workers, is making the workers feel that a truly Filipino sentiment recognizes the dignity of labor and the fact that honor lies in honest toil.

For the Filipino workers who realize that respect and dignity are worth far greater than monetary gains, the accolades and tributes afforded to them and the sincere concern for their welfare are enough for them to feel proud of their honest toil. (PIA 8)
