MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) Just as he was stressing the “good news” about his administration, President Benigno Aquino III’s speech was disrupted on Sunday by some four to five University of the Philippines graduates who stood up inside the UP amphitheater in the Diliman, Quezon City campus, bearing placards raising various issues like calls for a minimum wage increase.
The President had just started his speech when the four graduates stood up and marched forward from where they sat, separately bearing their placards.
One called attention to the P125-legislated wage hike being demanded by workers to help them cope with high oil prices.
There was another placard calling attention to the Hacienda Luisita, the Cojuangco-owned estate still under litigation.
“No to demolition,” was yet another placard carried by another graduate, who was reprimanded by his teacher.
