At last year’s climate talks in Mexico, Bolivia voiced opposition to the Cancun Decisions, requesting further deliberations and arguing that the measures agreed are totally inadequate to the task of tackling climate change.
The Cancun Decisions are a major step-back from the legally binding obligation of rich industrialised countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and to support developing countries efforts to tackle climate change.
What’s more, based on the meagre voluntary emission reductions proposed in Cancun, scientists estimate that global temperatures could rise by an average of 4 degrees, devastating vast populations and ecosystems, especially in the South.
There is strong evidence that many developing countries agreed to the Cancun Decisions under great pressure and this week’s climate talks in Bangkok will see whether the countries most affected by climate chaos will be able to regroup against the pressures from the industrialised countries.
In this panel, Ambassador Pablo Solon, head of the Bolivian delegation, along with government and social movement representatives, will give a complete update on the current state of climate negotiations, the issues at stake, and perspectives for the future.
This event is organized by the Thai Working Group on Climate Justice and Focus on the Global South.
