IRCT joins call to end acts of violence and related human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity
25-03-2011

The IRCT has joined with Civil Society Organisations globally in welcoming the initiative by 83 states calling for a world-wide end to acts of violence and related human rights violations committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Both the statement by the states and the NGO statement were delivered to the plenary session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on 22 March 2011.

“Around the world men and women find themselves becoming victims of torture purely as a result of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This is abhorrent. Therefore we applaud the initiative by 85 countries to call for an end to this now and commit to continuing to provide, through our member centres worldwide, rehabilitative care for all victims of torture,” said Brita Sydhoff, IRCT Secretary General.
