The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) recognizes that the proposed Three-Grading Period System of the Department of Education (DepEd) may offer practical solutions to persistent issues in the school calendar, including lost school days due to disruptions, the non-completion of lessons in the final weeks of the school year, and the need to provide time for meaningful co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for learners and the mandated celebrations. It may also help streamline teachers’ end-of-quarter and end-of-school-year tasks and ensure more regular term breaks that can be utilized for rest, health, and wellness.
However, TDC firmly underscores that these potential gains will only be realized if DepEd ensures critical preparatory measures. These include comprehensive pilot testing, sustained and genuine consultations with stakeholders, and the calibration of school forms—preferably through a more efficient and teacher-friendly digital system. Equally important is the provision of updated and adequate teaching and learning materials for both teachers and learners.
This reform must be pursued with clear planning, sufficient support, and the meaningful participation of those on the ground. Above all, we emphasize that any reform must uphold and protect the rights, welfare, and dignity of teachers. TDC remains committed to constructive engagement to ensure that policy changes are responsive and firmly grounded in the realities of our education system. #
