Freedom of Expression Conference (FreeXP.con) VIII Declaration
“Empowering Youth as Advocates for Freedom of Expression and Truth”
In light of the growing challenges to human rights, particularly the restrictions on truth, freedom of expression, and limited access to information in the Philippines due to state regulations, censorship, campus repression, and the misuse of laws such as libel, we, the organizers, youth advocates, and participants of the Freedom of Expression Conference VIII, reaffirm our resolute dedication to safeguarding these indispensable rights.
Within this context, we emphasize the pivotal role of the younger generation in championing and upholding freedom of expression and human rights. As stewards of our collective values, we the youth advocates are shaping a future grounded in fairness, equality, and inclusivity. Empowering them to confront challenges to freedom of expression, foster resilience, and resist efforts to curtail their rights is of utmost importance. We emphasize the significance of meaningful and genuine youth engagement in advocating for freedom of expression, human rights and climate justice.
To fulfill this commitment, we put forth the following recommendations:
o Promote and defend human rights: We urge young individuals to cultivate a daily awareness and understanding of human rights, nurturing a culture that respects, asserts, and protects these rights.
o Advocate for positive and transformative change: We challenge the youth to explore and champion causes aligned with non-violent and transformational advocacy, amplifying their voices as agents of change, and empowering the younger and aspiring generations to continue the missions and objectives of the current human rights advocates.
o Stand for climate justice: We call upon the younger generation to advocate for the preservation and protection of Mother Earth, demanding climate justice and adapting just transition framework in the face of environmental challenges.
o Build platforms for information exchange in the marketplace of ideas: It is imperative to establish both online and offline platforms for youth to connect, exchange information, and spotlight inspiring stories of change, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
o Initiate and drive narrative change in online spaces: We encourage youth to actively engage in online and offline spaces, leveraging their influence to reshape narratives that embrace openness, diversity, and respect for human rights.
In commemoration of International Human Rights Week culminating on the 10th of December 2024, we unite with a commitment to collectively foster an environment where youth can flourish, express themselves freely, and actively contribute to the advancement and safeguarding of human rights. Together, we aspire to build a future where open discourse thrives, dissent is honored, and human rights endure for generations to come.
