Freedom of Expression Conference (FreeXP.con) VII Declaration
“Youth action for promoting and defending freedom of expression in Southeast Asia”
In light of the mounting challenges to human rights, notably the constraints on freedom of expression and limited access to information in Southeast Asia due to state regulations, censorship, and the misuse of laws like libel, we, the organizers, youth advocates, and participants of the Freedom of Expression Conference VII, affirm our resolute dedication to safeguarding these indispensable rights.
Acknowledging the serious human rights situation in Southeast Asia, we staunchly oppose measures and actions that undermine freedom of expression and impede the free flow of information, as they run counter to the foundational principles of democracy.
Within this context, we emphasize the pivotal role of the younger generation in championing and upholding freedom of expression and human rights. As stewards of our collective values, we the youth advocates are shaping a future grounded in fairness, equality, and inclusivity. Empowering them to confront challenges to freedom of expression, foster resilience, and resist efforts to curtail their rights is of utmost importance. We emphasize the significance of meaningful and genuine youth engagement in advocating for freedom of expression.
To fulfill this commitment, we put forth the following recommendations:
Promote and defend human rights: We urge young individuals to cultivate a daily awareness and understanding of human rights, nurturing a culture that respects and asserts these rights.
Advocate for positive change: We challenge youth to explore and champion causes aligned with positive advocacy, amplifying their voices as agents for change.
Stand for climate justice: We call upon the younger generation to advocate for the preservation and protection of Mother Earth, demanding climate justice in the face of environmental challenges.
Build platforms for information exchange in the marketplace of ideas: It is imperative to establish both online and offline platforms for youth to connect, exchange information, and spotlight inspiring stories of change, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
Initiate and drive narrative change in online spaces: We encourage youth to actively engage in online spaces, leveraging their influence to reshape narratives that embrace openness, diversity, and respect for human rights.
In commemoration of International Human Rights Week and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR@75) culminating on 10 December 2023, we unite with a commitment to collectively foster an environment where youth can flourish, express themselves freely, and actively contribute to the advancement and safeguarding of human rights. Together, we aspire to construct a future where open discourse thrives, dissent is honored, and human rights endure for generations to come.
Signed on December 2, 2023, at Hive Hotel, Quezon City, Philippines.
