Opposition solon scores SEC’s profiling, witch-hunt of foundations, NGOs

An opposition lawmaker scored Tuesday the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for profiling and witch hunting foundations and non-government organizations.

Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said the supposed “criminal profiling” of SEC is “prone to abuses” and violates the basic human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“This is prone to abuses because basic freedoms are being curtailed,” he told reporters in a press conference.

He criticized the SEC’s issuance of Memorandum Circular No. 15 dated November 7, 2018, saying that it “violates the following basic rights and fundamental freedoms, among others: association, expression, dissent, pursuit of legitimate advocacies, and the right to privacy.”
