Red is the Color of Remembrance

Ruby is the name given to a 40th anniversary. The color of ruby is red – appropriate for remembering the 40th anniversary of the 1972 declaration of martial law.

Yesterday, at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Memorial Center, I facilitated a ritual of remembering. Families and friends came from as far away as the province of Quirino and Cavite to share stories about heroes and martyrs enshrined on the Wall of Remembrance.

The activity was organized by Journey With Heroes, a group of Bantayog volunteers whose mission is to keep alive the memories of our heroes and martyrs. Also, we want to tell the story of their lives to the generation of Filipinos who have no experience or memories of the years of repression and resistance.

Every quarter, we invite relatives and friends of heroes and martyrs whose death or birthday (in some cases, both) fall within that quarter. Yesterday’s remembrance was for those from July, August, and September.
