“Buhay Dagat, Buhay Natin”
1,075 meter Mural Fencing and Ocean Jam Concert Celebrate Ocean Month

In celebration of the Month of the Ocean, The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (DENR-PAWB) in partnership with Yabang Pinoy, Dolphins Love Freedom, Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines, Save the Philippine Seas, Yabang Pinoy and Dakila – Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism, held today Ocean Jam, a 3 hour concert advocating for the conservation and protection of coastal and marine environment.

The event kicked off with the mural fencing led by AG Saño, an artist known for his dolphin murals. The mural fencing was participated by more than 500 volunteer artists and individuals who covered the 1,075 meter fence of the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center with images of various marine species. Alongside, Yabang Pinoy, held an exhibit called “Yamang Dagat” which featured the vast treasures of the Philippine’s marine environment.

Noel Cabangon, Vice President of the artist collective, Dakila, and one of the concert’s performers, said, “The theme “Buhay Dagat, Buhay Natin” is fitting since our rich water resources are severely affected by the rapid increase in urbanization, industrialization and population growth. Illegal activities like dynamite fishing and other destructive fishing activities also brings about drastic negative effects to our marine ecosystem. “

Dakila Council Member, Musician and Nominee for PETA’s World Sexiest Vegetarian, Nityalila, added, “Filipinos should not just be proud of American Idol Jessica Sanchez or Boxing Champion Manny Pacquiao. Our marine environment is a unique national treasure that every Filipino can be proud of. We must do our share to protect this.”

In a study conducted in 2006, a group of scientists declared the Philippines as the “epicenter of marine biodiversity with the richest concentration of marine life on the entire planet”. The study identified the Philippines as home to an astonishingly vast marine life. This year’s Month of the Ocean aimed to educate the public and increase their awareness on the richness of coastal and marine resources in the Philippines. The celebration also campaigned to boost support from the public for conservation efforts for our marine ecosystem.

Cabangon further added, “We, in Dakila, believe that every Filipino should be involved in taking care of these resources. Aside from being a source of pride, these marine resources are also a great source of livelihood and a basin of life sustenance in our country. The activities that are part of this celebration seek to elevate the regard of Filipinos, especially the youth, to our oceans.”

The event culminated with the Ocean Jam outdoor music festival with performances from Joey Ayala, Jeck Pilpil with Peacepipe, Nityalila, Radioactive Sago Project, and Noel Cabangon.##
