Chamber pushes mining devt despite calls for ban, gets Mindanao biz backing

MANILA, Philippines – The main mining industry association, unfazed by calls for an outright ban on mining in several parts of the country, vowed to pursue pending ventures while educating the public about their gospel of responsible mining.
The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) said it will keep fighting for the pursuit of mining ventures in the country, asserting the sector’s contribution to the economy.
“As long as the Chamber is here, we will continue to fight for responsible mining,” said Rocky Dimaculangan, COMP Vice President for Communication, at the recent “Media Forum on Mining Development Concerns” at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) in Davao City.
At the same time, the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) expressed full support to the development of the mining industry in Mindanao, where some of the biggest mineral reserves – particularly aluminum, copper, gold and iron – are located.
