GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines — Journalists here passed the hat Thursday morning to help raise a bounty for the arrest of the gunmen and mastermind in the January 6 murder of their colleague, Tatak News publisher and editor-in-chief Christopher Guarin.

On Wednesday, after a donor who asked for anonymity put up an initial P50,000, media organizations agreed to raise a P200,000 reward for the capture of Guarin’s killers.

At a press conference the next day called by the local chapters of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines and Kapisanan ng Mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas, the Socsksargen Press Club, Tri-Media Association of General Santos and Publishers Association of General Santos, media practitioners raised another P11,750 in individual donations in just 10 minutes.

Several local media outlets also vowed to chip in and drumbeat the fund campaign to once and for all put an end to the media killings that have made this city the most dangerous place for journalists in the country.

At the press conference, the media groups expressed their anxiety at the lack of progress in the investigation of the Guarin murder.
