‘Stop Xstrata-SMI at all cost’ – communist rebels

  MANILA, Philippines – Communist rebels in southern Mindanao hinted of impending attacks on a controversial mining company in the hinterland borders of Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, Sarangani and Davao del Sur, saying Xstrata-Sagittarius Mines Inc. should be stopped from continuing to operate “at all cost” to prevent a repeat of the devastation wreaked by recent flashfloods on Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities.

Ka Efren, spokesman of the National Democratic Front in Far South Mindanao, said in a statement that the disaster visited on the two northern Mindanao cities by tropical storm “Sendong,” which claimed more than 1,200 lives, “carries a most important and urgent message for all of us: logging and large scale mining is dangerous and destructive.”

“Yet, as the people bury their dead today and try to recover from one of the worst floods in northern Mindanao … Xstrata-SMI has turned utterly deaf to all the sensible warnings and precautions as it continues to pursue its copper gold mining projects in the quadriboundary of southern Mindanao,” the rebel spokesman said.
