Groups Remember Green Heroes, Martyrs

In response to the global call to remember green heroes and martyrs, Cebu groups will hold solidarity activities tomorrow, November 10, 2011 – the International Day for the Remembrance of Environmental Heroes and Martyrs.

Groups shall talk about some of the environmental martyrs to remember their contribution to the advocacy. Recognition shall be given to individuals and groups for their green heroism. This will be followed by brief presentations of the initiatives currently being pursued as a fitting tribute to the green martyrs.

Sitting in the panel are leaders from the Cebu Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Environment (CASE), Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) –Visayas, Philippine Earth Justice Center (PEJC), Road Revolution Network, Movement for Liveable Cebu and Freedom from Debt Coalition-Cebu (FDC-Cebu).

A candle-lighting activity will be led by the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ), SANLAKAS, Kongreso ng Pagkakaisa ng Maralita ng Lungsod-Cebu (KPML-Cebu), Kilusan Para sa Pambansang Demokrasya-Cebu (KPD-Cebu), FDC-Cebu, CASE and TFDP-Visayas to symbolize the collective recollection of the green martyrs.

Joining the groups are Cebu City’s Barangay Environmental Officers (BEO) who shall mobilize to support the activity.

Earlier today, the Cebu City Council issued a resolution recognizing November 10 as the International Day for the Remembrance of Environmental Heroes and Martyrs. The resolution, which was sponsored by Councilor Nida Cabrera, expressed support for the candle-lighting activity.

Photos of the martyrs and heroes shall be displayed during the activity.
