Jeepney group to strike Monday
By KRIS BAYOS

MANILA, Philippines — A major transport organization will call a jeepney strike and other urban centers in the country on Monday to protest rising fuel prices.

The Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) decided to go ahead with the strike despite a dialogue with government officials led by the President Benigno S. Aquino III last Wednesday.

Another transport bloc, made up of Pangkalahatang Sanggunian Manila and Suburbs Drivers Association (Pasang Masda), Alliance of Concerned Transport Operators (ACTO), Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (Fejodap), Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (Altodap), and Liga ng Transportasyon at Operaytors sa Pilipinas (LTOP), is not joining the strike.

Fejodap President Zeny Maranan said their group was satisfied with Malacañang’s promises to implement single ticketing for traffic violators, apprehend policemen who coerce public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators to give bribes in exchange of violation exemptions, and to modernize jeepney fleets by funding the conversion of diesel engines for all them to run on liquefied petroleum gas.
