Nominations for the Macli-ing Dulag Award for River Initiatives is now open!

1. What is the Macli-ing Dulag Award for River Initiatives?

The Macli-ing Dulag Award for River Initiatives (MDARI) was conceptualized to honor individuals and organizations for their exemplary dedication to programs, projects and initiatives that impact the preservation, protection and/or rehabilitation of Philippine Rivers.

MDARI aims to inspire the Filipino people to value and care for our environment, most especially rivers, the blood vessels of our homeland.

MDARI is named after Macli-ing Dulag, a respected tribal chieftain or pangat of the Cordillera’s Butbut tribe, who defended their ancestral lands and the Chico River against invasive development that did not consider its ill effects to the people and the environment. Macli-ing articulated the fight for Chico River and fought to the last of his breath when he was murdered in April 24, 1980. His death inspired thousands of Kalingas to broaden the struggle into a mass movement in the Cordilleras.

In recognizing the invaluable efforts of individuals and organizations, the Sagip Ilog Pilipinas Movement is honoring the memory of Macli-ing Dulag, a true environmental hero and promoting the preservation, protection and rehabilitation of our river systems.
