Freedom of Expression Conference or FreeXP.con2

Freedom of Expression Conference or FreeXP.con2 is second instalment of the Free XP.con including 7th Human Rights Pinduteros Choice Awards of the Human Rights Online Philippines held last 1-2 December 2017 in Quezon City that gathered 46 human rights defenders, journalists and bloggers.

FreeXP.con2 will highlight the situation of freedom of opinion and expression (FoE) in the Philippines, which continues to be under threat with impunity. From human rights defenders, media and journalists, bloggers and individuals who are critical of the government are subjected to rampant and highly coordinated “trolling”, online abuse and smear campaign, in order to seed disinformation and foment targeted attacks, which undermines enjoyment of their right to freedom of expression, and democracy in the Philippines.  This onslaught of online abuse represents a real threat to the freedom of expression both online and offline, psychological and even the physical safety of human rights defenders, journalists and individuals critical of the government.

Free XP.con2 will explore some of these trends with human rights defenders, legal experts, journalists and victims of reported online abuse in the Philippines. The conference will provide venue for sharing of experiences and responses to the online threats and disinformation, and generating evidence-based concrete platform of actions in defending the FoE against the culture of impunity and a system set-up to silence dissent in the country.

Free XP.con including 7th Human Rights Pinduteros, a milestone event of the HRonlinePH project, “Protection and empowerment of human rights defenders in the Philippines” with support of the British Embassy Manila under its British Embassy Programme Fund.

[Statement] Press Freedom is Everyone’s Right #StandWithRappler -HRonlinePH.com

Press Freedom is Everyone’s Right #StandWithRappler

The Human Rights Online Philippines (HRonlinePH) expresses alarming concern over the Securities and Exchange Commission’s decision to cancel the certificate of incorporation of Rappler, an online news site for allegedly violating the ownership restrictions.

Media regulation is one thing. Political vengeance is another. The way the Duterte government works, the motive is quite obvious. It is gagging the media and eliminating dissenters.

We should take advantage that we are still under a democratic form of government while the charter change is underway. Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are fundamental rights that are fully guaranteed in our Constitution. Both are essentials to ensure transparency and accountability in our government.

The Freedom of Expression Conference Declaration https://hronlineph.com/freexp-con/freedom-of-expression-conference-declaration/ emphasized that the government has the obligation to foster an enabling environment for freedom of expression by taking measures to promote media and digital literacy, including but not limited to, engaging with civil society organizations and other stakeholders to address the negative effects of disinformation and propaganda.

But the government is sending us with a clear message. It does not tolerate dissent. It does not allow critical voices. All of us including all netizens are now vulnerable to attack from trolls to government sanctions.

Let us make use of what we have to protect these rights. The Internet provides with means to stand and fight back. We should continuously promote human rights. We should cover our websites with news and updates on human rights issues. We should share photos and videos of actual footages that show the reality of human rights on the ground. We should create a viral trend in Twitter and Facebook. We should swamp the chat rooms to engage others in online public discourse. We should occupy every nook and corner of cyberspace whenever human rights are concerned.

Our rights including our right to freedom of expression and the press are never handed over to us in a silver platter. It is almost always the fruit of our resistance, of our struggle for truth and justice, and for freedom and democracy.

Let us DEFEND PRESS FREEDOM! Let us DEFEND RAPPLER!

[Blog] Yes, it is good to be online. But we can still do it better offline -HRonlinePH.com

Yes, it is good to be online. But we can still do it better offline

Presented during the 4th HR Pinduteros Choice Awards night, December 1, 2014, Conspiracy Bar and Garden Cafe.

I BELIEVE we have all acknowledged that the internet plays a crucial tactical role in advancing our advocacies.

We are in fact dazzled by the viral hype surrounding our online campaign and that of others.

Photo by Take back The Tech

Photo by Take back The Tech

It is really good to look at the metrics and see how it is shooting up with all the hits, likes and comments we are receiving. The analytics has its own value to show us our own trends.

But the question remains to be answered is this: Are we really faring up in the battle of information? Or is internet organizing our only means to reach out a wider population or even our own families, friends and networks? Do we really believe that in one click of the mouse, we can spark a social revolution?

Lest we forget as history attests that social change is always improbable, unpredictable, and sometimes spontaneous.

Only real-life action is the only way to achieve a genuine social transformation. Clicking a link can never replace our voice in the streets. Nor can we rely on social media alone to get people off their screens.

Yes, it is good to be online. But we can still do it better offline.
To inform, to inspire and to mobilize people for change virtually can never outdo the way we do it in an interfaced and personal way.

We are human beings after all with all the potentials to change and to change the world.

Overview

2nd HR Pinduteros Choice Awards is an event that aims to contribute in promotion of human rights online while we give recognition to efforts of HR pinduteros.

Human Rights Online Philippines or HRonlinePH.com started last March of 2011 and was officially launched in December 1, 2011 at Crystal Ship Café in Quezon City.  The launch was highlighted by recognizing individuals and networks that contributed to the HRonlinePH.com’s initial success as an online community and resource on the country’s human rights condition through the 1st HR Pinduteros Awards.

More than a year after, as of December 2012 HRonlinePH.com has reached 283,598 hits or views.  Last October 2, 2012 (During Black Tuesday) and October 27, 2012 were its busiest days with 1,541 and 2,294 visitors respectively according to our statistics provided by wordpress.com, giving us an estimated average of 600 hits a day since its conception last year.

We are consistently ranking in the top 10 of the site TopBlogs.com.ph under the category politics, government and more. In fact as of December 9, 2012, we are ranked 3rd among other blogs. We have also reached 573 followers in facebook and 196 in twitter. We are also being visited by thousands of readers from other countries like the US, United Kingdom, Austria, our neighboring countries and more.

We may not be the best blog in the Philippines, but we are one of the most promising Human Rights online community of pinduteros right now!

2nd HR Pinduteros Choice Awards

In our fight against the present state of the Cybercrime prevention law, we will not be stopped in using the internet in informing, inspiring and mobilizing the netizens to our cause. We will defend internet freedom! Let our voices be heard.

In celebration of 2012 Human Rights Day and as a way to give thanks to HR Defenders who continued their support by patronizing and contributing online articles, photos, statement, press releases and other resources, HRonlinePH.com is awarding its 2nd HR Pinduteros Choice Awards.

The HR Pinduteros Choice Awards is an online event that aims to give recognition to human rights defenders’ online activities (Individuals and groups) that informed, inspired and mobilized the online readers to our common cause that is to promote, defend and assert human rights utilizing the internet as a tool.

Online polling and popularization of the event also hopes to contribute in increasing awareness and build up for the international HR day celebration every December 10, through encouraging the netizens to visit and learn more about human rights issues, campaigns and etc. posted and featured in different HR sites.

Human Rights Pinduteros is a name we coined during Dakila’s Digital Activism Training or DIGIBAK in 2011 referring to HR community of internet users, HR advocates and activists (as a network) that promote and defend HR and believe in HRonlinePH.com’s call to inform, inspire and mobilize our readers to our cause.

[Statement] RA 10175 is an Anti-Cybercrime Law that criminalizes internet freedom an assault to human rights! -HRonlinePH.com

RA 10175 is an Anti-Cybercrime Law that criminalizes internet freedom an assault to human rights!

Human Rights Online Philippines (HRonlinePH.com), a group of human rights defenders online, stands against the present state of the Anti-Cyber Crime Law and we demand that such law must be consistent with human rights standards and perpetrators behind this spiteful law be held accountable.

RA 10175 or Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 is a State crime and an assault against the human rights of the people. HRonlinePH.com is one with the Filipino netizens in condemning its intention to deliberately go against our right to defend human rights online.

Under the law, activists and human rights defenders will be the obvious and primary target of attacks by guilty politicians and government officials. The intentional inclusion/insertion of treacherous provisions poses great danger to defenders utilizing the internet in its work to promote, defend and assert human rights against violators from the government.

The law is an obvious assault to many of the peoples’ rights both activists and ordinary citizens like free speech, freedom of expression, due process and among others. It is inconsistent with government’s obligation to respect, protect and fulfill human rights as provided in the Bill of Rights under the Philippine constitution and international Bill of Rights.

The law is also a blatant breach of the Government’s obligation and commitment to the United Nation International Covenant on Civil Political Rights (ICCPR) which states that;

Article 19
1. Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference.
2. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice.

Certainly we need a law that would protect the people from cyber criminals and it’s our elected officials’ obligation to provide us one. But we cannot allow a law that would be used to suppress any of our democratic rights and freedom may it be on the internet or on the grounds. We must not allow any law that violates standards and protection of our rights.

We challenge and demand that PNoy government fulfill its duty and obligation to protect us. Protect the people from cyber criminals and from any form of attacks of human rights violators from the government.

We reiterate and assert that it is our right to defend human rights offline and online and any law that would violate these rights must be junked and perpetrator must be held accountable!

It is obviously the intention of the malicious provisions of the law for guilty politicians to protect themselves by depriving the people of venues for airing demands and remedy for their issues.

It is not a crime to criticize government inaction and irresponsibility, it is our right!
It is not a crime to expose government violations, it is our right!
It is not a crime to assert and defend our rights, it is our right!
But it is a CRIME by the Government to violate our internet freedom because it is our human rights!

And the WikiPInoy of the Year nominees are….
by Ivy Jean Vibar, abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines – So-called muckrackers, a musician, an artist, a historian and online advocates have been nominated for an award honoring the empowerment of the public via open information.

Commission on Audit (COA) commissioner Heidi Mendoza and the late broadcast journalist Gerry Ortega have been named candidates for WikiPinoy of the Year, because of their drive to expose wrongdoings in government and the business sector.

Other nominees are comics artist Manix Abrera, political prisoner Ericson Acosta, Fil-Canadian YouTube sensation Mikey Bustos, historian Michael Charleston Chua, and musician and commentator Lourd de Veyra.

Groups vying for the award include the people behind HRonlinePH.com, Facebook page SEA Games 2011: Team Philippines News Updates, and Transparencyreporting.net.

WikiPinoy of the Year is given by locally-based online encyclopedia WikiPilipinas every year to people or groups who empower the public using new media.

“Instead of being decided by the WikiPilipinas editorial board, this year’s winner will be decided by an online poll,” WikiPilipinas Project Lead Merck Maguddayao said. “Also, the nominees come from different fields…and so are able to use different media in spreading their message.”

Past recipients of the award include Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism Executive Director Malou Mangahas, political pundit Manuel L. Quezon III, and Filipino bloggers.

This year, we have all witnessed the transforming power of social media. It has become a vehicle that stirred the ordinary people in every city across the globe to come together to claim for their rights and to effect change even in the face of violent repression.

Philippines is no exception. Social media in the country have already transcended from a mere venue for self-expression and entertainment to a source of alternative news and a platform for social connection, participation, or even political mobilization.

That is how HronlinePH.com came into being.

From a simple collaborative effort of individual human rights advocates to bring the different human rights advocacies online, we grew into a network of human rights activists whose shared motivation is to make human rights a reality for all. Using the available digital technology, we inform, inspire and mobilize the general public especially the underprivileged and the marginalized sectors to assert and defend their basic human rights.

And we will continue to perform this role.

We will keep on providing a space to show the plight of Filipino workers from the brunt of unfair labor practices and job insecurity here and abroad. We will continue to voice the cry of farmers for genuine agrarian reforms. We will carry forward the rights of children even those who are in conflict with the law. We will never cease to expose the detrimental ecological effect of mining on land and water resources and the displacement of farming communities from their indigenous agricultural lands. We will advance the right for sexual orientation and gender identity against any forms of discrimination. We will continue to support the women’s right of choice and access to reproductive health. We will condemn at the highest level the act of torture, enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings. We will reprove inhumane and violent demolition of informal settlers. We will stand side by side with the writers, artists, journalists in preserving the freedom of the press and expression. We will demand for a guarantee of standard of living with adequate social services free from corporate greed. We will steadfastly exercise and defend our rights offline and online.

The HRonlinePH.com launch and Winners of Pinduteros Awards 2011

Bloggers’ network and various human rights organizations in the Philippines launch HRonlinePH movement and portal on 1st December 2011 at Crystal Ship Café, Quezon City.  Started as a simple discussion of ideas of promoting human rights online, a group of enthusiastic bloggers and human rights defenders found each other, shared information on human rights and formed HROnlinePH.   Today, it finds its niche as an effective resource on the country’s human rights condition.

Internet and social media play an important role in information-communication today.  There has been an upsurge in the number of sites, and now HRonlinePH joins the larger movement of electronic campaign.  HRonlinePH draws its activities through individual opinions of bloggers, facebook members, and twitters’ network on current Philippine issues.  It is also highlighted by facilitation of various statements, position papers and campaign advocacies of organizations of various political traditions and affiliations to land a spot in both the print media and the digital world.  It interfaces with the other human rights websites and resources online, and organizational identity in an attempt to promote an issue that best captures international human rights principles.

HROnlinePH (or Human Rights Online Philippines) is a movement specialized to promoting and protecting human rights in the Philippines through Information Resources Online.  As a movement, it may fan a successful revolution as exemplified by the Arab Spring.  Yet, it knows so well, that it is not THE revolution where human rights may find its place in the hearts of the States.  It  may be a part; it can be a part; and for HRonlinePH, it must be an essential part of winning a battle for the dignity of persons.
