10 Women who won the #HumanRights Pinduteros Choice Awards
“While beauty products are there to enhance a person’s face and body, I believe they should not exist to define what beauty is.”
“Your latest TV advertisement about a young girl who was “stopped by her dark and oily skin” in doing what she wants sends a wrong message to all girls and women out there. Why should one’s skin color dictate what you can or cannot do? What is the difference between a girl who has dark skin versus a girl with light skin? Does a person who have lighter skin color automatically become more beautiful, more empowered? Does she gain more friends, admirers?” ayon pa sa apila ni Ayeen.
“We have decided that this is a critical moment to contribute to the widening and deepening resistance to violence against women, in the wake of the epidemic of rapes in India. This becomes urgent as in the Philippines, one in 10 women aged 15-49 experienced sexual violence, and for deaf women, it is 1 in every 3 women raped. There has been an increase in violence against indigenous women especially in mining communities, including the recent murder of a pregnant woman in Tampakan. We see the rise in hate crimes against lesbians. There has been a steady growth in the prostitution of women and children as the climate and capitalist crises continue.”
No. 4: The impact of Philippines’ Conditional Cash Transfer Program on Consumption by Melba V. Tutor -4th Pinduteros Choice Awards HR Off-The-Shelf 2014
“Results show that households have responded to program conditionalities but there is very little room to improve consumption of other basic needs. The recent program modification of increasing education grants to older children and covering up to secondary school completion will help households sustain induced behavioral changes over time. Stronger impact on the poorest fifth of households underscores the need to improve the targeting mechanism to address leakage issues.”
Sa No. 5: koihernandez.wordpress.com ni Maria Karol Hernandez – 5th HR Pinduteros Choice for HR Blogsite – 2015
Human Rights Pinduteros’ Choice for HR Campaigns
“Violence against women is a policy of the Duterte administration. This violence is evident in the president’s economic policies, his verbal attack on women, and his marginalization of women in power. Today, International Women’s Day 2018, we are telling Mr. Duterte that we’ve had enough of these. We are rising, resisting, reclaiming our power!”
Hindi rin mawawala ang Coalition Against Traficking of Women – Asia Pacific na nagwagi sa puso ng mga pinduteros noong 2018 at 2019.

One year ago today, 8 T’boli and Manobo community members in Barangay Ned, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato were killed in an alleged military operations against communist rebels. But to tag them as “rebels” is to disregard their rights as legitimate owners and defenders of their land and ancestral domain. For more than 28 years, they have struggled struggled to protect their ancestral domain from the encroachment of coffee plantations and coal mining.
We demand justice for the killings!
We demand for the cancellation of the IFMA, and the ancestral domains to be returned to the community!
We demand a stop to all forms of harassment and human rights violations towards indigenous communities and defenders of territories!

Let’s Protect Human Rights Defenders
ForumAsiaVideo
Published on Mar 10, 2015, youtube
The meaning of human rights would be lost if there was no one to speak about them and defend them wherever and whenever they are violated. In this sense, human rights defenders (HRDs) play a crucial role in monitoring and challenging human rights abuses and violations, contributing as well to the dissemination and safeguard of the core human rights principles.
By standing up for the rights of others against powerful interests, HRDs and their families are often exposed to a wide range of risks and threats, with women human rights defenders facing specific risks.
In its new video FORUM-ASIA highlights the profile of HRDs in Asia and the challenges they face defending human rights, paying homage to their courage and stressing the need for greater protection.

Aurora, the Philippines: land deals and development at a price – video
Aurora’s governor says the development of a Pacific eco zone will bring benefits to this poor region of the Philippines. But locals wonder how long construction jobs will last, and what impact the development of a port, tourist haven and trading hub will have on livelihoods and the environment. ‘We are fighting for our seas and ancestral lands,’ says one fisherman

Balitok (Ilocano term for GOLD) captures a slice of life and reality of indigenous tribes (Kalanguya and Kankanaey) practicing artisanal or small-scale mining in the province of Nueva Vizcaya as their means of economic survival. The lush, mountainous, and mineral-rich province is one of the 23-28 Mining Priority Sites of The Philippine government. The province alone is threatened by thirty-two (32) mining tenements / applications and home to the two approved Financial Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) mining permit in the Municipalities of Kasibu and Quezon.
The documentary follows the laborious stages of mining in a cinema verite style (from extracting the ore, transporting, milling, panning, separating pyrite and gold up to the heating process) from the point of view of Ongan, a 13 year old small-scale miner, and Mona, an artisanal miner since the 1960s.
The documentary serves as an eye-opener for the viewers as they peek into the world of artisanal and small-scale miners to get a grasp of the whole mining issue in the Philippines.

A feminist flashmob organized by World March of Women-Philippines, participated by Women Human Rights Defenders from different NGOs in the Philippines.
About World March of Women-Philippines
“We march to the streets, gather in spaces of protest and launch myriad forms of collective action, as we draw our strength from the wisdom forged by the herstorical struggle of our ancestors and our continuing efforts to sustain these struggles. We are telling our governments, the men in our societies, the people and institutions whose actions, policies, perspectives, ideologies and behaviour maintain the political, social and economic oppression of women that change we want, and change we are making happen.
“Here in the Philippines, the state of the majority of Filipino women remains precarious. True, there has been renewed hope under a new government that promises to be the total opposite of the inept government that GMA’s administration was and to undertake reforms in governance, but this breath of fresh air is so thin it is fast depleting, threatening once again the gains that the women’s movement in the Philippines have achieved.”

“Two men look out the same prison bars; one sees mud and the other stars.” (Frederick Langbridge)
The human spirit never loses its brilliance no matter what challenges it encounters. In the face of darkness, it shines even brighter with its light igniting the light of others.
“Liwanag sa Dilim” (roughly translated in English as “Light in Darkness”) is a creative representation of the daily life of inmates in the New Bilibid Prison.
We see how one prisoner’s optimistic outlook in life can spark change in all areas of Bilibid.
We witness the talents and skills that have been developed behind bars through rehabilitative endeavors in education, sports, small enterprises, arts and crafts.
The production of this video is in line with the 10th year celebration in prison service of Baliklaya, the only student-run prison service organization in the Philippines.
About BALIKLAYA
Baliklaya, a non-profit, non-political, student-run group, is an applying organization of the Ateneo de Manila University. Before it became a full-pledged organization last 2009, it was the flagship program of Ateneo Lex, a separate accredited organization.
Vision
Baliklaya envisions the formation of a community composed of legally, economically, and socially-aware youth, engaged in alleviating the challenges of communities deprived of justice and fundamental human rights.
Mission
To steer its membership towards the task of nation building and to inculcate in them a strong desire for social commitment, the organization shall undertake projects which uplift the dignity, worth, and welfare of one of the most misconceived, marginalized, and impoverished sectors of Philippine society – the prisoners.
Advocacy
Baliklaya’s advocacy is prisoner rights, particularly that of the inmates inherent right tohuman dignity, realized through the organization’s various Bilibid-based prison service endeavors and intense advocacy campaign. While, in truth, any human being’s dignity can never be taken away (not by any court of justice or societal condemnation), inmates can’t help but feel a loss of dignity, because of their circumstances (the errors they have committed and the guilt that stems from such, as worsened by poor living conditions). Thus, by providing them venues for wellness development and opportunities for productivity, the organization empowers said inmates, with the hopes of restoring this lost sense of dignity.
Balik means to go back, laya is freedom. While the organization does not aim to literally free prisoners, it pursues a different sort of freedom, one that frees the prisoners from societal stereotypes and the feeling of lack of dignity.

Women human rights defenders first blended with the vendors, with some holding balloons, as fortune-tellers, beggars, etc. Three dancers started clapping to the tune of the music, then seven dancers joined releasing purple balloons bearing the logo of the World March of Women. They were joined by another 20 coming from the crowd, until it grew to 70. The last batch of dancers, students from the University of the Philippines –Manila made it a throng.
On the last minute of the song, as steps turned to hip-hop, dancers took off their costumes, revealing white shirts which defiantly bore words “RH Now” in the face of continued delay in its passage in Congress. Some shirts shout “Climate Justice!”, in the face of ongoing negotiations in Doha, Qatar and the devastation of typhoon Pablo in Mindanao. Other shirts carried slogans such as “Women Need FOI!”, “Secure Jobs for All!” and “Scrap VFA!”
Around 100 participated in the flashmob from Alliance of Progressive Labor (APL), Bagong Kamalayan, Batis Center for Women, Buklod, Center for Migrant Advocacy (CMA), Coalition Against Trafficking in Women – Asia Pacific (CATW-AP), Focus on the Global South, Foundation for Media Alternatives, KAISA – Nagkakaisang Iskolar para sa Pamantasan at Sambayanan – UP Diliman, KAISA-KA, Pambansang Koalisyon ng Kababaihan sa Kanayunan (PKKK), Partido ng Manggagawa, Sarilaya, TIGRA Philippines, UP Manila students, WomanHealth Philippines, Women’s Crisis Center (WCC), and Youth and Students Advancing Gender Equality (YSAGE)
