Job Objectives

The Philippines office is looking for a new program officer, whose main job would be:

To contribute to the development and implementation of the organization’s thematic programs (climate change and environmental justice, trade and investments, power and the Commons – land, water, forest)
To conduct research and produce knowledge outputs from research
To represent Focus in social movements and other campaign platforms
Location and Reporting

The post is based in Quezon City. Occasional travel to other areas of the country is expected. The program officer will report directly to Focus’ Philippines Coordinator/Head of Office and is expected to work closely with fellow program officers in the Philippines, as well as in Bangkok and New Delhi.

Key Responsibilities

NB: Work patterns will require flexibility, self-motivation and judgement from the post holder and strong coordination with relevant program staff.

Support the Philippines Coordinator/Head-of-Office and fellow program officers in developing the thematic programs by generating ideas and innovative projects
Undertake research and/or policy analysis
Develop knowledge outputs/communication materials
Develop, manage and nurture national level advocacy partnerships / alliances on key Focus issues
Represent Focus in meetings, conferences and workshops and to visitors as needed
Be actively involved in advocacy and campaigns carried out by Focus
Develop a strong analysis of local, national and sub-regional contexts to inform everything Focus does
Actively participate in and contribute to team processes
Qualifications

Minimum of two-year work experience in civil society and/or advocacy and/or activist organizations in the Philippines
Substantial knowledge of issues related to climate change and environmental justice, land and water at the national, regional and international levels; and of social movement work in the Philippines, Asian and international level
Have done research on issues important to Focus work (specific research outputs will be required)
Very good writing skills, esp. in English, that reflect capacity for analytical thinking (sample work will be required)
Knowledge of Tagalog, Cebuano or other languages desirable
Knowledge of key communication principles and processes, especially those that are pertinent to social movement campaigns and CSO advocacy work
Strong awareness of and sensitivity to gender issues
Must be based in the Philippines

Balay Rehabilitation Center (Balay) in cooperation with the Danish Institute against Torture (DIGNITY) shall launch as study entitled: TORTURE AND CORRUPTION: UNDERSTANDING CONNECTIONS and RELATIONSHIPS.

The over-all aim of the study is to understand the relationship between torture and corruption by examining encounters between policing agents and the policed from their respective perspectives. In particular, the study seeks to look at recent incidents of torture and episodes of corruption. Furthermore, the study aims to explore exchanges, resources mobilized, connections invoked during these encounters.

Duration of the research

The research shall be conducted from the 1st of October 2014 to the 31st of December 2014.

Successful applicants shall be mainly responsible for:

  • Conducting field interviews in communities and government agencies
  • Gathering news articles regarding the subject of torture and corruption for the past 24 months
  • Transcribing field interviews
  • Participation in planning, coordination and data analysis meetings

Requirements

Graduate of an undergraduate course in Sociology, Community Development, Social Work, Psychology or any related social science disciplines.

Experience in doing research; and, knowledge about the field of human rights and torture is preferred.

1. Act as Project Coordinator for the Leyte relief, early recovery and rehabilitation operations

– Should also be capable of basic photography and videography

The main aim of this FRIDA is to offer accessible, strategic and responsive funding for young feminist-led initiatives and to strengthen the capacity of young feminist organizations to both control their own resources and increase their social change impact.

Who Can Participate?

Informal and formal groups incorporated and led by young women or transgender youth (under 30 years) that are committed to:

  • Advancing and defending women’s human rights;
  • Improving the lives of young women/transgender youth at local, national, regional or international levels;

Objectives of the Conference:

1.      Highlight good practices  of cooperatives from here and abroad and share the lessons, insights and experiences.

2.      Promote solidarity and cooperation among trade unions, cooperatives and social enterprises and encourage collaboration and dialogue on issues and policies that relate to economic equity, social justice and inclusive growth.

3.      Explore and promote transformative practices modelled after Solidarity Economies which challenge oligopolistic/monopolistic modes of conducting business and the unfettered rules of neo-liberalization and free trade.

4.      Illustrate the dynamic and innovative programs, services and processes of cooperatives and other social enterprises.

Papers must demonstrate the following practices and concepts:

Guideline for Paper Writers:

·         Deadline for submission of abstract: March 31, 2012. Must be one to two pages in length; Times Roman; 12 font.
·         Abstract will be screened and once accepted, a full paper of 10 to 15 pages must be submitted on or before July 31, 2012.
·         Full paper will be subject to another review and returned to author with comments and suggestions.
·         Paper must be complete with citations, spelled out acronyms and abbreviations and accompanied by a short description of the author.
