[Event] March for Climate Justice Pilipinas -ECOJIM

March for Climate Justice

March for Climate Justice

For the past several years the Philippines has been battered by one mega-typhoon after another, a phenomenon that has rendered it as among nations that are ‘most vulnerable” to the impacts of climate change.

The stakes are high. The opportunity for change has never been brighter, the risks of inaction never darker. During the U.N. climate talks in Paris, world leaders need to hear loud and clear that our survival is non-negotioable. It is up to us to make it happen sooner rather than later.

Join the Peoples March for Climate Justice on November 28.

ECO-WALK is our concrete response to Pope Francis’ invitation to care for our common home which is the main theme of a national conference on integrity of creation, human rights and climate justice at Asilo de San Vicente de Paul. This resulted to the formation of Ecological Justice Inter-Faith Movement (ECOJIM).

11903843_752359281577651_7510732094611468529_n

As you very well know, the Holy Father Pope Francis has issued an encyclical “Laudato Si” to encourage all of us to care for our common home – Mother Earth. This coming October 4, 2015, Feast of St. Francis, ECOJIM together with various religious groups will hold an ECO-WALK to dramatize its call for ecological justice. Participants will be coming from four assembly points representing the four elements (Earth, Wind, Water and Fire) and will later converge at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

The assembly will begin at 6am with the celebration of the Holy Mass and will march to QMC by 8am. A brief program until 12noon will be held at the Amphitheater of QMC.

We would like to invite you and your group to join us in our march for ecological justice. Let us make this as our way of expressing our gratitude to the Holy Father for Laudato Si and for visiting the Philippines when we ourselves have suffered the effect of climate change due to Typhoon Yolanda.

The details of the program will be relayed to you by one of our contact persons. For inquiries and confirmation of attendance, please call (02) 373-2973 or email us at ecojim.sect@gmail.com.

[Press Release] Unique obstacle run to relive Martial Law period -UP SAMASA Alumni Association

Unique obstacle run to relive Martial Law period

11879143_486941681473446_7281934384217503500_o

Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in that dark period of our nation’s history when the free press was shut down, the voice of the people was suppressed, and thousands of Filipinos were abducted, tortured and summarily executed?

The University of the Philippines is again living up to its reputation as the bastion of youth social consciousness, this time through an obstacle run that will give runners a taste of what it was like during the years of Martial Law.

Dubbed The Great LEAN Run (TGLR), the activity will feature obstacles reminiscent of dictatorial rule, such as barbed wire, water cannons, anti-riot police, arbitrary arrests and much more. Runners will aim to survive the challenges of the course for a chance to win prizes, not to mention unique bragging rights.

TGLR honours the life of Lean Alejandro, student leader of the 1980s who led the student movement that helped a national people’s action to depose then President Ferdinand Marcos.

Atty. Susan Villanueva, Chairman of the UP SAMASA Alumni Association, said, “The overthrow of the dictator and our subsequent return to democracy is a major victory of the Filipino people. The youth of today should be made aware of the real situation at the time so that they can learn from it and be guided by its lessons as they become the new leaders of the nation.”

Proceeds of the obstacle run will go to the UP fund for the Liwasang Lean Alejandro.

The Great LEAN Run will be held on September 19, Saturday, 5:00pm at the UP Sunken garden and Academic Oval in Diliman. Registration is ongoing online at the Great LEAN Run Facebook page and Chris Sports branches at SM Megamall, SM City North, Glorietta 3 and Metro Marjket Market BGC. For details, interested participants may contact Irish Vayne Alacar at 0906270646 and vayne.alacar@withoulimits.ph.

[Press Release] Thousands of cyclists and advocates to ride for freedom on June 12 -DAKILA

Thousands of cyclists and advocates to ride for freedom on June 12

All roads will lead to Iloilo Provincial Capitol Grounds on June 12, as hundreds of cyclists and advocates raise the flag of freedom on Independence Day to stop human trafficking and promote road sharing.

The Independence Day Freedom Ride is a bike ride event organized by advocate group Dakila, in partnership with Centralian Cruisers Cycling Club (C4) which aims to raise awareness on human trafficking and to promote road sharing in Iloilo with the tour of the six district plazas.

Dakila new

The first Independence Day ride in Iloilo was held on June 12, 2013 and participated by more than 500 cyclists.

“We believe that while it is important to celebrate our freedom from colonial rule, it is also important for us to realize that many Filipinos are still enslaved. We want to celebrate our 117th year of independence by continuing the fight for the freedom of others,” Allyn May Canja, coordinator of Dakila-Iloilo said.

“Human trafficking is a serious problem especially in our country because we offer cheap labor. A lot of times we only see women being trafficked for sexual exploitation but in fact, human trafficking can happen to both men and women and for different reasons other than sexual exploitation, such as forced labor. There are even cases of professionals such as doctors who experienced being trafficked,” Canja added.

Freedom Ride is meanwhile part of the “Stop. Look. Listen” campaign of Dakila to popularize the 1343 Anti-Trafficking Hotline. It was launched in Iloilo on April 20, 2013.

Every year around 300,000 to 400,000 Filipinos fall prey to human trafficking in their own country and abroad.

“We are enthusiastic about this event because aside from raising awareness on human trafficking, we also get to promote our cause which is road sharing and to transform Iloilo City into a more bike friendly city. We will be riding our bikes for freedom from human trafficking. In a way we feel like we are using our own advocacy, to promote another advocacy.” Biking advocate Daniella Caro said.

The Freedom Ride is part of the Project Freedom Campaign of Dakila, which aims to raise public awareness on Human Trafficking and empower advocates and citizens to become watchdogs in their own communities by driving them into action through grassroots involvement and amplified action through mainstream and digital media.

The Freedom Ride is free and open to the public. This year’s Independence Day Freedom Ride will start at 3:00 p.m. from the Iloilo Provincial Capitol Grounds and will pass through the six plazas representing the six districts of Iloilo City.

The ride will end at Iloilo Provincial Capitol for a short program to commemorate the Independence Day.

Quezon City Pride march

Rainbow Greeting!! In behalf of the QC Pride March Team (QCPM) with the support of the Quezon City government and the Quezon City Pride Council (QCPC), and in celebration of the 75th Jubilee anniversary of Quezon City, we invite you and your organization to celebrate the Quezon City LGBT Pride March!

QC PRIDE MARCH

With the theme, “EQUALITY. Walang Labis, Walang Kulang,” this year’s theme focuses on the assertion for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons. As we celebrate the gains achieved on LGBT rights throughout the years, there is still much work that needs to be done and thus, the need to continue asserting for equality and equity in society.
The QC LGBT Pride March 2014 celebration will be on Saturday, December 13, 2014 and will have the following events:

  • LGBT PRIDE PARADE – The Parade will start at Tomas Morato – Timog – East Avenue – Matalino Street and will end at the Quezon Memorial Circle where a short program will be held to culminate the event.
  • LGBT PRIDE ACCESSORIES – LGBT accessories, shirts, rainbow flags and other novelty products will be sold throughout the event. If you are an interested seller, please email the QC Pride team.
  • LGBT PRIDE FLOAT COMPETITION – all groups, organizations and local Barangays with a fabulous float using recycled materials are automatically included in the float competition. Top prize will get P 30, 000, P20, 000 and P10, 000 in cash!
  • QC LGBT RAINBOW Awards – Recognition will be given to selected individuals/groups who have asserted the promotion of LGBT rights in the Philippines.
  • DIVERSITY FASHION SHOW – if you want to showcase your clothing line, be a model for the night or, why not both? Then this is your event!

To join the celebration, you can register online at http://www.qcpridecouncil.com/p/qc-p.html OR send the accomplished reply form to qcpridemarch@gmail.com. We will email and send an SMS communication to confirm receipt of your registration.

You are also requested to send a representative to attend the Acquaintance/Orientation meeting on THURSDAY, Nov 20, 1-4 (final date & time) pm at the Bulwagang Amoranto, 3rd floor, Main building Quezon City Hall. This is also the time where groups will draw lots for the sequence of parade participants during the parade.

Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Dindi Tan at 0916.6114640 and/or email qcpridemarch@gmail.com.

Let’s celebrate LGBT Pride as we assert equality and acceptance!
Yours in Pride and Equality,
Ging Cristobal – Overall QC Pride Coordinator
