[Statement] On the 2022 Philippine Presidential Election | AMP

Joint Statement on the 2022 Philippine Presidential Election

After the landslide victory of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte-Carpio in the 2022 presidential election the Aktionsbündnis Menschenrechte-Philippinen (AMP) calls on the new government to immediately address the dire human rights situation in the country.

The AMP expresses its concern that neither Marcos Jr., the son of former dictator Marcos Sr., nor Duterte-Carpio, the daughter of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte, have distanced themselves from the human rights violations committed under their fathers.

Both Marcos and Duterte-Carpio vowed to continue President Duterte’s war on drugs and to disallow independent international investigations into the human rights abuses under the Duterte government. Instead of neglecting these abuses, the unity proclaimed by the Marcos-Duterte tandem should imply acknowledging the victims and human rights violations, enabling justice, and ending impunity. The AMP therefore calls on the designated President Marcos and Vice-President Duterte-Carpio to enable the investigation and prosecution of at least 279 cases of extrajudicial killings of human rights defenders (HRDs) and journalists1 as well as of about 12,000-30,000 extrajudicial killings in the name of the so-called war on drugs.

[Press Release] TDC challenged bets for Teachers’ Agenda

Group challenged bets for Teachers’ Agenda

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) calls on the candidates for May 2022 elections to consider their comprehensive agenda for the country’s teachers and education workers dubbed as the ‘13-Point Teachers’ Dignity Agenda.’

“We have witnessed several forums and even debates where candidates, especially those gunning for the highest office in the land have presented their plans, unfortunately, we have yet to see a suitable platform that responds to the needs of our teachers and the education sector in general,” said Benjo Basas, the group’s National Chairperson.

Basas said that the 13-Point Teachers’ Dignity Agenda focuses on the rights and welfare of the teachers such as the increase in salaries, compensation for those affected by COVID-19, free post-graduate education, provision of free laptop computers and internet services, and putting up of a separate insurance system and hospital for teachers among other benefits. But there are also demands that address the learning of children like the change in curriculum, reduction of class size, provision of books and other materials and facilities, and adequate funding for the safe return of in-person classes.

[Press Release] PAHRA launches Human Rights Electoral Agenda for 2022

PAHRA launches Human Rights Electoral Agenda for 2022

The Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) launched on Saturday, Feb. 5, its comprehensive human rights electoral agenda called #KarapatDapat. More than 70 representatives from human rights organizations, civil society and grassroots organizations, party-list groups, and religious organizations joined the launch via Zoom and Facebook Live.

Secretary-General Ellecer “Budit” Carlos discussed how crucial it is for pro-democracy forces and citizens to stand their ground and emphasize that human rights is indispensable in good governance and that it should be the primary framework for public service and expressed in political platforms as the nation prepares for the national and local elections in 2022. He said that while there are candidates who are promising to promote, protect, and integrate human rights in their own electoral platform of governance, there are also notorious candidates who pose a threat to human rights and human rights defenders. The Karapatdapat Campaign also enables support for surfacing pro-human rights candidates and prevents candidates who will surely be tyrants and despots from winning the elections.

Alyansa Tigil Mina and allied environmental groups threw their support behind the senatorial bid of four green champions in an online green sortie where the groups publicly declared their endorsement of Cong. Teddy Baguilat, Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Atty. Chel Diokno, and Senator Leila de Lima.

Jaybee Garganera, ATM National Coordinator, said the four senators are the first senatoriables ATM is endorsing, as they have been known champions of green bills, particularly the Alternative Minerals Management Bill.

[Statement] On the possible political interference in the disqualification case against Marcos Jr. | PAHRA

PAHRA’S STATEMENT ON THE POSSIBLE POLITICAL INTERFERENCE IN THE DISQUALIFICATION CASE AGAINST MARCOS JR.

The member organizations of the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates are all concerned about the revelation of COMELEC Commissioner Guanzon regarding possible political interference in the ongoing disqualification case against Bongbong Marcos. It is clear that for the past nearly six years of the Duterte regime, big political players aligned with the current regime have been influencing the dispositions of those who represent Philippine institutions which are mandated to provide balance in government.

These deliberate and purposeful intrusions have crippled our democratic institutions and eroded their independence. Through this expose, we bear witness to the emasculation of non-partisan Constitutional Commission officials.

Jessica Soho interviews 4 presidentiables

There are many good things going for the three-hour GMA 7’s Jessica Soho Presidential Interviews aired Saturday night.

It started at exactly 6:15 and wrapped up at 9:15 at which time you realize you have just watched one hell of a TV interview involving at least four presidential contenders.

It was a refreshing experience because the state of the country’s talk shows has sunk so low after the disappearance ofgood TV hosts who lost the ratings war and pushed to late night slots.

For the Presidential Interviews, the subjects looked prepared- from Vice President Leni Robredo, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Mayor Isko Moreno and Sen. Manny Pacquiao.

[Statement] PAHRA maintains its position that the COC of Bongbong Marcos should be canceled

STATEMENT OF THE PHILIPPINE ALLIANCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATES ON THE DISMISSAL OF THE PETITION TO CANCEL THE CERTIFICATE OF CANDIDACY OF BONGBONG MARCOS, JR.

The Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) has received the decision of the Second Division of the Commission on Elections regarding our petition to cancel the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

PAHRA maintains its position that the COC of Bongbong Marcos should be canceled and that the case, with all its merits, should have been enough to put an end to his candidacy. It should be noted that the Second Division has recognized the misrepresentations made by Marcos Jr. in Item 11 and Box 22 of his COC. The petition that PAHRA and its member organizations filed is grounded on a clear revelation of a dishonest act by the late dictator’s son that impacts the electoral process and the welfare of all Filipinos. Dishonesty, deception, and cheating are central to and what characterize the personhoods and reign of the Marcoses, hence the significance of this case.
