6th HUMAN RIGHTS Pinduteros Choice Awards

6th-hr-pinduteros6th HUMAN RIGHTS Pinduteros Choice Awards

Theme:  Stronger Involvement and eXertion of human rights online

In 2016, the Philippines has become the most “social nation” in the world with 41 million active social media users (facebook, twitter, and instagram) between the ages of 18 and 65. Social media have become an integral part of everyday life and the major lifeline of information or misinformation especially during the May 2016 Philippine elections.

No doubt, it is now a game changer. It has not only changed the dynamics of social life but also reshaped the political landscape. It provided a new battlefield where everyone now has the means and opportunities to participate and to voice out their ideas and opinions. However, it is susceptible to abuse and misuse. Partisan groups used dirty tactics, mobilized huge resources and even organized army of paid trolls who created dummy accounts in order to sow intrigues, launch hate campaign and unleashing derogatory remarks against rivals. It has grimly polarized the nation, making the recent elections the most vicious and divisive in history.

This sort of things still happens even after the elections as there were deliberate efforts not only to disregard one’s rights online but to completely distort the concept of human rights. Having a general public with very low appreciation and understanding of human rights, many are swayed to believe the unbelievable. It is even considered a fair game.

But with the new government’s strong pronouncement against human rights, subverting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of human rights defenders (HRDs) and political oppositions is now becoming a norm. In fact many women HRDs who only posted or tweeted constructive views and opinions received sexist, and harsh words, harassment and death threats from loyalists and die-hard supporters of elected government officials. Even private corporations are now using the Anti-Cyber Crime Law to discredit legitimate causes by turning them into a criminal offense. There are now cases of SLAP suits, and even using the cyber libel to charge HRDs for their posted statements on abuses affecting the communities and the environment. Many human rights organizations feared that they are under communications surveillance where their individual and organizational emails and private communications are being accessed either through internet companies and service providers or through interception devices or internet hacking.

This alarming situation calls for a stronger involvement and exertion of human rights online.

Human rights defenders need to defend internet freedom by promoting online discourse on human rights and clarifying its ambiguities.

We must reclaim the cyberspace by developing an online culture based on human rights that can challenge stereotyping and hate campaign.

We are HRonlinePH.com.

This is not merely our identity but it is a call to action.

Our stronger online involvement must be translated into aggressive offline action.  This will culminate on the celebration of the International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2016.

As our humble contribution to this celebration, the Human Rights Online Philippines (HRonlinePH.com) will hold its 6th Human Rights Pindoteros Choice Awards to honor human rights defenders who despite the continuing threats, intimidation and attacks perpetuated against them continue to assert, uphold and defend human rights for all online and offline.

Since 2011, the HRonlinePH.com has recognized the remarkable work and dedication of human rights defenders in their ability to use the internet to advance their advocacies and to bring human rights into public discourse through social media platforms.  As a portal of human rights news and information, HRonlinePh,com has helped human rights organizations and individuals to reach out the public and established linkages between and among different stakeholders.

With the theme, Stronger Involvement and eXertion of human rights online, we invite our networks and friends to look back on the past years of our existence – our achievements and failures – as well as to look forward for another six years of challenges and opportunities as we will continue our relentless journey both in the cyberspace and in the streets to promote and protect of human rights for all by carrying out these SIX TASKS:

Inform and Share: Raise awareness by sharing information.

Inspire and Link: Create value for humanity by linking our causes for change.

Mobilize and Act: Encourage people to act by mobilizing them in a meaningful participation.

It is a call for unity because we are the HRonlinePH.com.

Thus the event will also serve as a venue for us to call and campaign for the right to free expression and protection of HRDs online.
